Brandon Backe has control issues that he needs to contend with. Walking 25 batters in 36 innings has caused his whip to ease up to 1.77 on the season, but he still has a decent 4.25 era which basically tells us that he has been pitching out of jams. He does seem to pitch better at home, where he has allowed 14 hits and 5 earned runs in 17 innings of work. He has also fared well against the Nationals in his career, by holding them to a low.209 BAA (batting average against). The Nationals send John Lannan to face the red hot Astros. Lannan is coming off his worst start of the season, by allowing 6 hits and 5 earned runs in only 3 innings of work against the Pirates. That makes the second time in his last 5 starts that he has been hit hard. Now he gets to try his luck against an Astros team that has won 8 straight home games, and will be looking to make it 9 in a row to complete the sweep of the Nationals.
