This game features two pitchers that are pitching decent of late. The Rockies Aaron Cook struggled in his last outing before the All Star Break, surrendering 5 runs over 5.2 innings of work. However, he had previously allowed a total of 9 earned runs over his last 6 starts. San Diego counters with Chad Gaudin, who gave up 1 run over 6.2 innings in his last start against the Diamondbacks. He has also allowed 3 or less runs over 4 of his last 5 starts. The big difference in this game will not come via the pitching duel. The Rockies have a huge advantage offensively, scoring 29 runs over their last 5 games as opposed to the Padres who have scored a total of 16 runs over their last 5 games, with 10 of those coming against the Giants in their last game before the break. Colorado has played well on the road, going 13-4 over their last 17 games, and will be starting their best pitcher against the Padres. I am not quite sure what to make of Chris Young this season. The Padres pitcher has pitched well at times, then not so well at other times. He has two games where he went 7 innings deep without allowing a single run, then he has two games that didn't see him make it past the 3rd inning, allowing 15 earned runs in the two combined starts. Most of his troubles have come when pitching on the road, where he has a 9.88 Era in 3 road starts. To complicate matters , he has pitched better in his day starts vs his night starts. When pitching at night this season, he has a 12.08 Era to go along with 21 hits in 12 innings of work. Bad news Chris, this is a night game! Randy Wolf gets the start for the Dodgers. Although, no power horse so far this season, he has pitched respectably, keeping his team in the games he has pitched. He has given up 4 or less runs in his five starts this season, while getting to the 6th inning in all but one game. I would like for the Dodgers to have better numbers against right handed pitching, but a .281 batting average and 5.29 runs a game vs righties over their last 10 games doesn't seem so bad as compared to how bad the Padres are hitting lefties. The Padres are hitting .213 and scoring 1.70 runs a game vs lefties this year, despite the success they have had so far. The Dodgers are a perfect 5-0 their last 5 games at home, and will be facing a Padres team that is 1-6 over their last 7 games over all, as well as 1-7 over their last 8 when playing on the road against the Dodgers.

Seems like we are getting a decent price on a Tigers team that has been hammering left handed pitchers this year(.303 BAA), especially at home where they are hitting an incredible .421 vs southpaws. Now, I know that most of the lefties the Tigers faced weren't the caliber of pitcher that Sabathia is, but they still should be able to score some runs tonight. Verlander has struggled in three starts this year, but pitched well against Texas(1 ER) in his only home start. The Yankees have lost 3 in a row after being swept by Boston over the weekend. Now they get a shot at a Detroit team that is 4-1 at home this season, and are 7-3 in their last 10 games when facing the Yankees at Comercia Park. Should be a heck of a game!

The NBA Playoffs is one of the easiest sports to win at consistently, day in and day out. Unlike the regular season, both of the teams will be looking to play their best, in order to advance to the next round. If your looking for 3, 4, 5, or even 6 releases a day, I’m probably not the Sports Handicapper you are looking for. I prefer to take what the Sportsbooks give me. This is a must win game for the 76ers. They have seven games left in regular season play, after playing Detroit at home today. Five of those seven games will be played on the road. Three of the road games are at New Jersey, Charlotte, and Toronto, but they must face Cleveland twice, and Boston down the stretch to finish the season. Detroit's schedule seems to be a little easier. With six games left, the stoutest competition will be at Miami on the 15th, which will be the last game of the regular season for the Pistons.

These two teams have been heading in opposite directions of late, with the Pistons losing 5 of their last 6 on the road, and the 76ers winning 3 of their last 4 home games.

Detroit has owned this series in the past, but are a completely different team this year. The 76ers are playing good ball, getting quality bench minutes, and will be looking to avenge their recent loss to Detroit on March 29th.

Let's side with a Nuggets team that has scored 100+ points in 9 straight games, resulting in an 8-1 straight up record while going 6-3 against the spread. The Knicks have lost 8 of their last 10, mostly because of a poor defensive effort. Five of their last 10 games have seen opponents top the 110 point mark in scoring. The Knicks are 1-16 in road games against teams better than .500 on the season, and catch the Nuggets after losing to the Jazz last night. Look for the Knicks to struggle in the high altitude of Denver. This makes the second straight night of playing in high altitude air, and may struggle in the second half, against a fast paced Nuggets team. The Knicks may be without Quentin Richardson and Larry Hughes. Both are struggling with ankle injuries, and if both or even one of these guys are out, that makes the Knicks task of winning even more difficult.

The Hornets have won 4 of the last 5 games in this series. They are also on a nice 7 game winning streak, and have held opponents to 96 or less points in 6 straight games. Atlanta has won just 4 of their last 10 games, but in all fairness, 7 of those 10 games were on the road. The hawks have scored under 100 points in 5 of their last 6 games. Chris Paul(21 PPG) continues to lead the way for the Hornets, while Joe Johnson(21 PPG) leads the way for the Hawks. Both teams are at pivotal stretches in their quest for the playoffs. New Orleans has played very well of late, and should be able to pull a win out on the road over an Atlanta team they have dominated of late.

#851 Dartmouth Big Green +8 1/2

3-Units (6:00 P.M. CST)

Dartmouth has won two of the last three vs Columbia on the road, and are a solid 4-1 over their last 5 conference games. They are currently ranked 3rd in the Ivy League with a 4-2 conference record, and are still in the race for the Ivy League Crown. The Big Green are led by Senior Forward Alex Barnett who leads the team with 19 points and 5 rebounds a game. Coach Terry Dunn has a deep roster and runs players in and out throughout the game to insure that he has fresh legs in towards the end. This theory has worked well, especially in conference play, where the Big Green have a 4-2 record.

Columbia has won three of its last four games, but are coming off of an embarrassing 35 point effort against Princeton on Saturday. The Lions will score more than 35 tonight, but should wear down in the 2nd half, allowing for an easy road cover by the Big Green.

NBA Selections:

Despite an overall losing record of 17-24 the Knicks actually have a winning record of 11-9 in their home games. Their also coming off a couple of home wins over Chicago and Phoenix, and now catch a Memphis team that has not only lost 7 in a row, but are an embarrassing 2-16 when traveling this season.

Al Harrington and Zach Randolph lead the Knicks with 21 points per game, while Randolph leads all Knicks with 13 rebounds per contest. New York has heated up on the offensive side of the ball, especially of late, and are averaging 106 points a game over their last 5 games.

O.J. Mayo and Rudy Gay lead the Memphis Grizzlies with 19 points a game, while Marc Gasol leads all Grizzly rebounders with 7 per outing. I mentioned earlier that the Grizzlies had lost 7 straight, and the main reason for that, is their lack of offensive fire power. They are averaging 93 points a game on the season, but are averaging 85 points a game over their last 5. To add insult to injury, the Grizzlies lost at home to the Knicks back in November. The Knicks torched the Grizzly defense for 132 points in that game. Look for much the same in this match up tonight.

Both of these teams have losing records, yet one seems to have a clear advantage over the other, especially in past match ups. Fresno St. has won 4 straight over Cal Poly dating back to 1998! Now the Mustangs find themselves in a rare favorite role over the Bulldogs. They catch a Fresno St. team that is on a two game losing streak, having lost road games to Creighton and St. Louis. Both these teams had winning records, and in fact all of the teams that Fresno St. lost to had winning records except Oregon St.(4-5). Cal Poly just lost to a 4-9 CSU Bakersfield team, and can't be feeling good about the way the season is going. Fresno St. on the other hand gets their first real winnable game on the road against a team they have managed to handle very easily in the past. Fresno St. is shooting a steady 45% from the field on the season, and in road games. Cal Poly on the other hand is shooting a miserable 35 % from the field in home games, and will have a tough time covering the spread in this game against the Bulldogs of Fresno St.

The Jets and Broncos have something in common. Do you know what it is? I do. They both lost to the lowly Oakland Raiders this year. Denver lost by a 10-30 score to Oakland just last week, while the Jets lost 13-16 to the same Oakland team back in the middle of October.

One thing has remained a constant in all of the Broncos games. They give up lots of points!!! They are ranked #28 in the league with 28 points allowed per game, and will be facing a Jets team that is ranked #2 in the league with 29 points scored a game. The Jets Brett Favre has been spreading the wealth in the receiving corps. He has 5 different receivers that are averaging over 20 receiving yards per game.

One of the reasons for the poor defensive play of the Broncos is the fact that they very rarely create turnovers, if fact they are last in the NFL with just under one takeaway per game. The one positive that the Broncos have going for them is Jay Cutler and the Broncos offense. The offense is ranked #2 in the league in total offensive yards, but have struggled in the red zone, which accounts for the #15 ranked offense in total points scored.

The wild card that makes the Jets the play, despite the high number, is the way their defense has played over the past few weeks. They did allow the Patriots to score 31 a couple of weeks ago, but other than that lone setback, have held 5 of its last 7 opponents to 17 or less points. Denver on the other hand has allowed 6 of its last 10 opponents to score over 30 points, while holding only one opponent under 20 points in this span. With the weapons that Favre has at his disposal in the receiving corps, and with Thomas Jones doing the damage with the running game, I see no way that they Broncos defense can keep the Jets from scoring, and scoring, and scoring.

Hey guys, I will go with a small lean on the Rays in this matchup on Tuesday night. Despite just average numbers for most of the season, Tampa's Andy Sonnastine came through in the clutch when needed. He posted a 3.16 Era for September while holding the White Sox to 3 hits and 2 earned runs over 5.2 innings of work on October 6th. Sonnastine and the Rays pitching staff have been able to hold Red Sox Slugger David Ortiz in check by throwing him lots of curve balls and sliders. It has worked up to this point, and the Rays probably will continue with this same philosophy on Tuesday night. Sonnastine will be opposed by Boston's Tim Wakefield. Wakefield will hold a special place in history on Tuesday night, being the oldest pitcher to start an ALCS game at the ripe old age of 42. Although pitching knuckle balls doesn't require a lot of arm strength, getting in a rhythm is very important, and this could be a problem with Wakefield, who hasn't pitched since September 28th against the Yankees. If Wakefield gets behind in the count, he has to rely on his fastball that tops out in the mid 80's, and this could spell disaster for Wakefield when facing a Rays team that is hitting .272 and scoring 6.23 runs a game over their last 5 games vs right handed pitching. Boston brought the best they had to offer on Monday, and now take a step down with a soft tossing Wakefield on the mound.

Most are saying that this Tuesday night match up between Troy and Florida Atlantic may very well decide who will be the Sun Belt Conference Champion. Although Florida Atlantic is the reigning Champion, they have played nothing like the team we saw last year. The Owls are 1-4, and lost their conference opener on a last second hail mary at Middle Tennessee St. last week. You would think that a team returning 18 starters from a Conference Champion team would be set to repeat, but the Owls have failed to meet season beginning expectations. Quarterback Rusty Smith has thrown only 4 touchdowns on the season, compared to 7 interceptions. The good news is that the Owls have played only one home game this season, and in that game against UAB, Smith threw for 3 touchdowns and no interceptions in a game that saw the Owls offense explode for 49 points. Troy comes in at 2-2 on the year. They beat Middle Tennessee St. 31-17 to start the season, then blew out Alcorn St. by a 65-0 margin. Losses were expected at Ohio St. and Oklahoma St., but now the Trojans find themselves 3 1/2 point road favorites to a Florida Atlantic team that has its backs against the wall. Although Jamie Hampton has more touchdown passes than Smith, lets not forget that almost half of those touchdown tosses came against Alcorn St. We have one common denominator in this match up, and that is that both have played Middle Tennessee St. on the road. Troy beat the Blue Raiders by a convincing 31-17 score, while Florida Atlantic lost 14-13 to this same Blue Raider team. Looking a little closer at the stats I noticed that against Troy the Blue Raiders actually had more first downs(20-16) and an advantage in time of possession(36-24), while Troy had a small total yardage advantage of 300-284. The Blue Raiders actually had a +2 turnover advantage, but lost the game as a result of going 0-4 on 4th down conversions. Despite losing last week at Middle Tennessee St., Florida Atlantic had an advantage in every category except one, and that was a -3 turnover ratio that ultimately cost them the game(barely). Look for Florida Atlantic to give its best effort of the season on Tuesday night. Their season depends on it. Worth noting for this game is that the line opened with Troy being a 3 1/2 point road favorite and has pretty much held steady until just a few minutes before this write-up. With 80-85 % of the public being on Troy, this tells me that a small amount of Sharp Money is coming in on Florida Atlantic.

Two rock solid defenses face off at Pittsburgh tonight. On the offensive side of the ball, we have rookie Joe Flacco going against a Steelers defense that is allowing 13 points a game, while the beat up Steelers and Big Ben try to get things going against a Ravens defense that is giving up 10 points a game. Steelers tailback Willie Parker will not be starting this game. In his place will be rookie Rashard Mendenhall. This will be Mendenhall's chance to shine, and I look for a big effort from here in this Monday night matchup. Ben Roethlisberger was sacked 8 times last week in Philadelphia, and has went down 12 times for the year, and this is definitely an area for concern. His counterpart, Flacco has problems of his own. Besides being a rookie, he has yet to throw a touchdown pass this season, and will be facing a Pittsburgh defense that has 6 interceptions this year. The question here is, who has the best chance of succeeding? I will lean with a Pittsburgh team that has experience at the quarterback position. Even should Roethlisberger goe down, Byron Leftwich should be able to step in and play respectably. Let's not forget that Pittsburgh has won 13 straight Monday Night home games dating back to 1992, and the home team is 4-1 against the spread the last 5 times these teams have faced off.

Now that the Angels have clinched the MLB's first playoff spot, they will not feel pressured to make things happen. Sometimes that is a good thing, as players get more relaxed and just play to have fun. However, the Athletics can't be happy that John Lackey will be facing them on Tuesday night. In 25 career starts against Oakland, Lackey is 14-3 while maintaining a low 2.67 Era. He has been even more impressive over his last 10 starts vs the Athletics, going 8-1 with a 1.71 Era. Oakland's Sean Gallagher will get the start opposite of Lackey. Gallagher pitched well in his first start back from the DL with shoulder fatigue, and he has won his only start vs the Angels. The Athletics are 1-6 in Gallaghers last 7 starts, and are 0-4 in his last 4 starts against teams with winning records. It's probably worth noting that Lackey is 7-2 with a 2.76 Era in his night starts, while Gallagher is 1-2 with a 7.52 Era in games he started at night. All the numbers point towards an Angels victory, and we are getting them at a decent price.

SThe final score of the San Jose St./Nebraska game last week was much closer than the final score indicated. The Spartans were down 14-12 early in the fourth quarter before Nebraska returned a kickoff for a touchdown to put the game away. Surprisingly Spartan Quarterback Kyle Reed is second in the WAC with a 72.7 pass completion percentage. The Spartans were able to rush for 137 yards against Nebraska, and will need to maintain a rushing game against San Diego St. if they are to have a chance for a win. San Diego St. may be in for a little letdown this week. They nearly upset Notre Dame and actually had a chance late in the game, but gave way in a 13-21 loss. Sometimes it is hard to get back up emotionally after such a heartbreaking loss, especially if the next game is on the road. San Diego St.'s Freshman quarterback Ryan Lindley has shown signs of promise at times, but has struggled in certain situations. He has thrown for 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. San Jose St. has a huge defensive edge in this matchup. The Spartans have held teams to an average of 285 yards a game, while the Aztecs have given up 412 yards a game. These two teams last met in 2006, and in that game San Jose won by a 31-10 margin. Look for much the same tonight.

Let's look at the obvious facts about tonight's game. We know that the Navy offense will probably go over the 400 yard mark in rushing against the Cardinals tonight. We also know that the Ball St. Cardinals will probably pass at will against the weak Navy secondary. So where does one go from here? Well, what I look for in this game is for the Navy offense to put together a few drives and score a few points here and there. But when they are faced with a 3rd and long, they will be in deep trouble, as they basically have no passing attack. Ball St. on the other hand will be able to mix the run and pass together, and should be able to turn a few of their 3rd and longs into first downs. Quarterback Nate Davis completed 21 of 24 Passes last week for 290 yards and 3 touchdowns. His favorite target was Dante Love who had 9 receptions for 171 yards last week, which just happened to be the 14th best receiving total in school history. Last week against Navy, Towson focused on the fullback, which led to slot back Shun White going wild for 348 rushing yards. You can bet that he will be a target for the Ball St. defenders tonight. Keep in mind that this is the first ever Ball St. home football game televised on ESPN. Also don't forget that Ball St. won at Annapolis last season, and get the Midshipmen at home in a National Televised Event.

Both teams will be playing their starters for about a half in this game. Philadelphia may be feeling a little pressure to win this game, after losing to the Steelers in their first Preseason contest, while Carolina comes in off an over time win over the Colts in their first preseason game. Carolina's Jake Delhomme will have to pass more in this contest tonight. He attempted only one pass last week against the Colts, mainly because of the success they had running the ball with DeAngelo Williams. The Eagles have a pretty stout defense, against both the run and pass, and should prove to be more of a test for the Carolina offense. Both McNabb and Kolb were effective last week at the Quarterback spot, and A.J. Feeley should improve over his sub par performance. Also, Philly will be getting a boost in the running game, with Westbrook back after a contract renegotiation. Delhomme has yet to prove himself after reconstructive surgery on his arm, and the quarterback position takes a huge nosedive downward after he exits the game.

Shawn Marcum was very unimpressive over his last couple of starts. Both were road starts, that saw him give up 10 runs over 10 innings of work. Today he gets to redeem himself back at home, where he has given up a total of 3 earned runs over his last 3 starts. The last time he faced Seattle he lasted 7 innings, giving up 1 earned run, while striking out a season high 9 hitters. Marcum will be opposed by Jarrod Washburn of the Mariners. Washburn has been the victim of a very stagnant Mariners offense, that has scored a total of 7 runs in his last 3 starts, all resulting in losses. The Mariners have lost 7 straight, and are in danger of extending that losing streak to 8 against this Toronto team that has won 5 in a row, and are 9-1 in their last 10 home games. The Blue Jays are killing left handed pitching, hitting .400 and scoring 11.05 runs a game vs lefties over their last 5, and hitting .378 and scoring 10.98 vs lefties over their last 10. Seattle on the other hand can't find a rhythm against righties, and are hitting .194 while scoring 1.71 runs a game over their last 5 games. I found a very impressive Umpire stat for this matchup, and I must say it favors the Blue Jays very heavily! The Home team has won 10 straight games when Umpire Bill Welke has been behind the plate. Even more impressive is the fact that the Mariners are 1-4 over their last 5 games that Welke called when they were on the road, while the Blue Jays have won 3 straight in games that he Umpired for them.

Talk about a guy wanting to stay in the Majors, and not be demoted!!! Justin Masterson was supposed to be filling in for injured Red Sox pitchers Daisuke Matsuzaka and Bartolo Colon. The Red Sox coaching staff keep waiting for Masterson to make a mistake, and he keeps pitching to perfection. He has allowed 2 runs or less in 4 of his 6 starts this season, and has made it to the 6th inning in 5 of 6 starts. Masterson is holding opposing teams to a .176 batting average while maintaining excellent control with a 1.08 whip on the season. He will be opposed by Arizona's Doug Davis. Davis has also been a huge success story on the season, after having thyroid cancer surgery on May 23rd. His numbers for the season, give no indication of any time off whatsoever. He allowed 1 earned run over his last 2 starts to American League teams Oakland and Kansas City, which both happened to be home games at Arizona. He has been a little less effective in road games, with the Diamondbacks going 1-3 in his road starts. The Diamondbacks are hitting .212 and scoring 2.17 runs a game vs righties over their last 5 games, while the Red Sox are hitting .255 and scoring 3.21 runs a game vs lefties over their last 5. Arizona has scored a total of 10 runs over their last 5 games, and may have trouble with sinker ball pitcher Justin Masterson tonight.

Jorge Campillo will be getting the start for the Braves on Friday night. Campillo is coming off of his best performance of the season, allowing 7 hits and 2 earned runs over 8 innings against the Angels in a losing effort on Sunday. He has pitched well at home, with the Braves winning 3 of his 4 home starts. Erik Bedard gets the start for the Mariners. The Mariners have lost 4 of Bedards last 5 starts, while Bedard has lost 4 straight road games. Seattle has all kinds of problems going into Atlanta. Besides having an interim Manager, they have not been able to generate any kind of offense. They are 3-7 over their last 10 road games, and 10-23 in road games for the season, while scoring 3 or less runs in 9 of their last 11 games. Atlanta on the other hand has one of the best home records in the Majors at 25-11. They are coming off a 10 game road trip that saw them go 4-6, and will be happy to be back at Turner Field. Don't look for Seattle's problems to get solved on Friday night, with Bedard on the mound. The Mariners have lost 9 of his last 11 starts, and will have their hands full at Turner Field where Chipper Jones is hitting .459 for the season.

The Colorado Rockies try for the sweep in their series against the Indians tonight. The Rockies will send Jorge De La Rosa to face a struggling Indians offense. Don't be fooled by De La Rosa's Era of 6.89. He is not the same pitcher that started the season by giving up 9 earned runs in 4 innings of work against the Dodgers. He opened the season with an Era of 20.25 and has brought it back down to 6.89 with a few good outings from the bullpen, and his most recent start against the White Sox. In the White Sox game he allowed 1 hit and no runs over 5 innings, while striking out 8. Jeremy Sowers gets the start for the Indians. Sowers has struggled this season, with opposing teams hitting .346 against him, and he has yet to make it past the 5th inning in any of his starts. The Rockies have played well at home lately, going 7-3 over their last 10, while the Indians have went 4-6 over their last 10 road games. The Rockies are also hitting .327 and scoring 5.79 runs a game over their last 10 verse lefties, while the Indians are hitting .229 and scoring 4.96 runs a game vs lefties over their last 10. With Sowers struggling and not getting very deep into the games, you can rest assured that the Indian bullpen will see extended action tonight. This scenario plays in our favor, as the Indian bullpen has a 7.63 Era with opponents hitting .306 against them over their last 5 games. The Rockies bullpen has been more reliable, with a 2.65 Era and opponents hitting .250 against them over their last 5 outings.

One has to wonder how the New York Mets will respond on a West Coast road trip, after all that's happening with Manager Willie Randolf and his future status as the Mets Skipper. They head out west after going 3-7 over their last 10 road games, and now they get to face an Angels team that is looking to turn things around after going 5-5 over their last 10 at home. The Angels will send Jered Weaver to the mound and are looking for continued success after winning 5 of his last 6 starts. He has been very good at home, having allowed 39 hits and 15 earned runs over 44 innings of work at home for the season. Opposing teams are hitting .236 against Weaver at Angel Stadium. Weaver will be opposed by Mike Pelfrey of the Mets. Pelfrey has pitched very well over his last 3 outings, but does not have a win over that span thanks to a blown save and very little run support. Despite good numbers of late, Pelfrey has struggled on the road this season, allowing 35 hits and 16 earned runs over 20 innings of work. Opposing teams are hitting .402 against Pelfrey when he has pitched on the road this season. The Angels should be a safe play tonight, with the visiting Mets hitting .237 and scoring 3.41 runs a game against righties over their last 10 outings.

One thing I have noticed about Andy Sonnastine is that Tampa Bay wins when he pitches. The Rays have won 8 of his last 10 starts, despite mediocre numbers from Sonnastine. He has pitched well over his last 3 games though , giving up 3 runs or less over 15 innings of work. He has also shown much improved control over his last 3 games, walking only 2 batters and allowing 0 home runs. Sonnastine will be opposed by Florida's Ryan Tucker. Tucker is making his second start of the season, after a successful debut against the Reds on Sunday. Tucker gave up 2 hits over 5 innings of work in a game that the Marlins won 9-2. The only negative in his debut was that he walked 5 batters. The Rays are coming off of a 3-6 road trip but have went 8-2 over their last 10 home games, while the Marlins have went 3-7 over their last 10 on the road. Tampa Bay is glad to be back home, and they have done nothing but win when Sonnastine has been on the mound.

Backe has allowed 3 or less earned runs in 4 of his 5 home starts, while opponents are hitting .230 against him in his home games. Backe will be opposed by Manny Parra of the Brewers. Parra has given up 3 or more runs in 4 of his 5 road starts, while opponents are hitting .352 against him in his road starts. This could spell trouble, as the Astros are hitting .313 against lefties at home this season, while the Brewers are hitting .237 against righties on the road. Look for Backe to have another strong outing at home, and for the Astros offense to get the job done against Parra, who has struggled on the road.

Milwaukee has won 3 straight, and sends Jeff Suppan against his former team. Suppan has been nearly perfect in his home starts this season, giving up 21 hits and 3 earned runs over 29 innings of work. The Brewers have won 3 of his 4 home starts. Suppan will be opposed by Doug Davis, who will also be pitching against his former team. Davis has given up 14 hits and 7 earned runs over his last 12 innings of work since coming back from thyroid cancer surgery. Last season Davis gave up 9 hits and 8 earned runs over 8 innings against the Brewers. He will have his hands full against them tonight, as they are coming off of a 3 game sweep of the Astros. They outscored the Astros 19-3 over the weekend, while the Diamondbacks won 2 of 3 over the Nationals. The Diamondbacks are hitting .212 against righties over their last 10 games, while hitting .188 on the road against righties this season. The Brewers are hitting .289 against lefties over their last 10 games, and are hitting .255 at Miller Park against lefties this season. Look for another impressive home start from Suppan, and for the Milwaukee offense to have another successful game against Davis.

Moehler pitched his best game of the season on Saturday against the Phillies, giving up 4 hits and 2 earned runs over 6 innings of work. That was the first time this season that Moehler made it to the 6th inning. He has also been giving up the long ball this season, and has given up 4 over his last 5 games. Opponents are hitting .292 against him this season, and he has given up 35 hits in 28 innings of work. Ben Sheets is not the guy you want to face when you are struggling against righties. The Astros are hitting .211 against righties over their last 5 games while the Brewers are hitting .261 against righties over their last 5. This is only Sheets 4th home start of the season, so look for a strong performance before the home crowd with a huge strikeout total.

#913/914 Washington Nationals/Arizona Diamondbacks Under 9

Sure, Tim Redding has bad numbers against Arizona. But don't let the 6.30 ERA against the Diamondbacks fool you. He hasn't faced them since 2005, over three years ago. His numbers have improved each year since 2005, and it looks as if he is having his best season of his career in 2008. He has given up 54 hits and 25 earned runs over 62 innings of work and has a respectable 3.59 era to show for his efforts. This season, opposing teams are hitting just .229 against him, where in 2005 they were hitting .328. One might ask why the line has moved steadily upward even though the Diamondbacks have lost 4 straight? One reason is that Redding struggled against Milwaukee in his last outing. He held them off the board for 5 straight innings but gave up 6 runs in the 6th. Redding's opponent will be Micah Owings. His numbers are very similar to Reddings. Owings has a decent 3.73 era to go along with 54 hits and 26 earned runs over 62 innings of work. Opponents are hitting a low .226 against him on the season. He is in very good form, allowing 5 earned runs over his last 3 starts. Offensively, both teams are struggling, especially against right handed pitchers. Washington is hitting .195 and scoring just over 2 runs a game against righties in their last 5 games, while Arizona is hitting .215 and scoring just under 3 runs a game in their last 5 games against righties. Look for a low scoring contest until the bullpens take over, at which time a few runs may be scored, as both bullpens have been average of late.

St. Louis pitcher Kyle Lohse has gotten better and better over his last 4 starts. But it would take a near perfect game to improve upon his last outing that saw him pitch 6 shutout innings, giving up only 6 hits against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He has given up 6 earned runs over his last 3 games, that were all quality starts. He will be opposed by Roy Oswalt of the Astros. Oswalt is just a fraction of his old self this season. He has allowed 85 hits and 43 earned runs over 69 innings of work this season. Even more disturbing is the fact that he has allowed 27 hits and 14 earned runs over his last 20 innings pitched, spanning 3 games. One thing that I like to look at is how many home runs a pitcher has allowed compared to the other pitcher. We see a big difference in this game tonight. Lohse has allowed 2 home runs in 63 innings of work, while Oswalt has allowed 15 home runs in 69 innings. This is a big disparity, and shows that Oswalt does not have command of the strike zone like he did in past years. The Cardinals are hitting .286 as a team against righties at home this season, while the Astros are hitting .244 as a team on the road. Look for Oswalt's home run number to go up after tonights game.

Despite the dismal numbers, the Rays have won 6 of his last 7 starts, mainly because they have been outscoring their opponents. Sonnanstine will be opposed by Vicente Padilla of Texas. Texas has won 6 straight games that Padilla has started. Padilla has given up 33 hits and 9 earned runs in his last 38 innings of work over. Texas has been held to 7 runs over their last 3 games, but have a huge .385 batting average and 9 runs scored against righties in their last 5 games. Tampa has also done well over their last 5 games against righties, with a .338 batting average while scoring 7 runs a game against them in their last 5 games. I will side with the more experienced Padilla in this matchup, and look for the Rangers to put up a huge offensive number tonight.

Opponents are having a hard time figuring him out, and a .101 BAA and 0.83 Whip shows that he has excellent control while dominating opposing hitters. Floyd will be opposed by Joe Saunders of the Angels. Saunders is also having an excellent year. He has given up 52 hits and 17 earned runs in 61 innings of work. The one team that seems to have figured him out is the White Sox. He has allowed 10 hits and 8 earned runs in 9 innings pitched against Chicago. Chicago has hit .295 against lefties in their last 5 games, which has help contribute to this 8 game win streak. The Angels have scored 2.9 runs a game over their last 8 and should have trouble against Floyd who excels at home.

When comparing these two starting pitchers, I see a lot of similarities. Both have low era's just above 3 for the season. Santana has won 5 games, while Hudson has won 6, and both have low whips which suggest they have excellent control. However, when looking at what each pitcher has done recently, I see a disparity. Hudson has given up 13 hits and 7 earned runs over his last 19 innings pitched, while Santana has given up 23 hits and 8 earned runs over his last 19 innings pitched. Atlanta is playing very well at home where they are 19-5 on the season and have scored 23 runs in the first 3 games against the Mets, while the Mets have scored a total of 7 runs in the first 3 games against the Braves pitching staff. Santana is a good pitcher, but I must question how he will do against a Braves team that is scoring runs in droves, and has a .309 batting average against lefties at Turner Field this season. I am not too concerned with Hudsons last outing against the Oakland A's, a game that saw him give up 5 earned runs in only 5 innings of work. Hudson only allowed 5 hits in that game, but issued a season high 5 walks, that ultimately cost him the game. One thing to note about this game is that Jerry Meals will be the Umpire for this game, and the Atlanta Braves have won 7 straight games when he was behind the plate.

They will be facing a struggling Milwaukee team that has lost 5 in a row and 9 straight games on the road. A 5-12 record spells double trouble for the Brewers, as they are 5-12 in the month of May, and are 5-12 the last two seasons at PNC Park against the Pirates. The Pirates will be starting Paul Maholm who struggled a little in his last three starts. He allowed 15 earned runs in 17 innings of work over his last 3 games. I am not going to throw in the towel on Maholm just yet, because 2 of those 3 games were road games. Seattle has lost 8 consecutive series since winning one over Oakland back on April 16th through 17th in a two game set. Their opponent today will be the San Diego Padres, who just happen to have the worst record in the Majors, and have not won a road series in over a month. Felix Hernandez will be getting the start for the Mariners. Seattle has lost 4 straight games that Hernandez has started, but to his credit, he is only getting 2.79 runs of support per game. He should break out of his slump today against the Padres, who have not been able to score runs this season. In fact they have managed only 8 runs in their last 3 games. Hernandez will be opposed by Shawn Estes of the Padres. Estes is making his second start since coming back from elbow surgery in 2006. He had a few minor league starts, and of concern here is that he allowed 13 hits and 8 earned runs in only 7 innings of work at AAA Portland, then was called back up to the Majors. This pattern sounds all to familiar, as Estes had a poor Spring Training stint as well with a 12.27 ERA. All the signs are showing that Estes pitching career is coming to a close. So why is this line not up over -200??? Estes won his first game back in the Majors against the Cubs on Tuesday, by allowing 7 hits and 2 earned runs in 5 innings of work. Today he will be facing a Seattle team that has a .323 Batting Average Against lefties at home this season. Hernandez is a strikeout pitcher, and should be able to pad his stats against one of the worst offenses in baseball this season.
